Characterization of anorectal function in individuals after stroke
Abstract: This study aimed to characterize anorectal function in individuals after stroke. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of stroke patients treated at the Physiotherapy clinic of the State University of the Midwest using a socioclinical questionnaire, visual analog scale for pain, Bristol scale, and physical examination of the evacuatory musculature. Results: The sample consisted of 32 individuals diagnosed with stroke, with a mean age of 50.23 ± 8.07 years. Bristol scale score of 1.22 ± 1.40, predominance of constipation, pain during defecation, weekly bowel movement frequency of 1.01 ± 1.45. Painful points of muscle involvement predominated in the external anal sphincter, and connective tissue involvement in the puboanal and iliococcygeus muscles. Conclusion: Stroke is strongly associated with impaired anorectal function, predominantly affecting the rectal emptying phase.
